Hi all. I thought I’d share some of the process that went into this week’s Cleopatra in Space. I don’t have the time for a detailed tutorial, but hopefully this visual step-by step is still kinda interesting. You can go HERE for a more in-depth process (well, before I starting coloring this thing). Also, you might enjoy this process vid I made of this page (flash required).

Super scribbly thumbnails: Just enough info to let me know where to lay things out. I don’t even know exactly what’s going on in that 4th panel.

Pencils: I draw in blueline so I can blow the pencils out in Photoshop when I scan my pages.

Inks: Not much to explain here. I inked the previous page.

Scan and Cleanup: I’ve blown out the pencils, cleaned up and re-sized my linework a bit, colored in some solid blacks and created my borders. The biggest change here is that forth panel, where I rotated the drawing about -45 degrees.

Flats: Tedious process. I color my word balloons a different color to differentiate them from the BG, which is the base color I use when selecting my colors.

Background: Backgrounds start getting painted in.

Character Shading: I like keeping the shading on the characters a bit more flat to keep them from blending in to the BG and hopefully make the story easier to follow. Main thing to stay aware of is where my light sources are. Although even that I might cheat a bit on.

Line Color and Extras: Here I’ve colored some of the linework  (like the sound effects and laser blasts) and added some speed lines to emphasize the action.

Letters and Finishing Touches: And last, I letter the page (the font is my own handwriting I created years ago) and add some fishing touches (like that laser blast in P3).
